Pulau Duyung

Pulau Duyung which is only a few hectares big sits between The Sultan Mahmud Bridge and Kuala Sungai Terengganu (Sungai Terengganu’s river mouth), making it easily accessible by road or river. Pulau Duyung or Mermaid Island is consisting of Pulau Duyung Besar (big) and Pulau Duyung Kecil (small). They are actually not really an island instead both are two peninsular that extends from the mainland and river towards the sea. Pulau Duyung Besar is the home of the most famous master boat makers and the oldest traditional boat making in Malaysia and is already an international tourist destination.

There, you can see boats being made by skilled boat builders who implement skills which have been passed down from generation to generation. They build row boats, deep-sea fishing boats and luxury yachts from memory and experience, and without blueprints and nails! Pulau Duyung is also renowned for its dried and salted fish, and fish crackers industries.

It is easily accessible via the Sultan Mahmud Bridge or the Kuala Terengganu waterfront by boat, for those who enjoy using sea transportation.

Tengku Tengah Zaharah Mosque

Tengku Tengah Zaharah Mosque or more commonly called Masjid Terapung is a unique design which is built on a floating platform, giving a floating feel from far away. The mosque is built on the estuary of Terengganu River by one of the prince in Terengganu state. Combining both modern and Moorish architecture design, the mosque symbolizes the innovation and modernization  in the state.

A state where religion is held close to its people's hearts, the Tengku Tengah Zaharah Mosque, or also referred to as the Floating Mosque, is one of the icons of Islam in the state. Built from an idea birthed by the late Sultan of Terengganu, Al-Marhum Sultan Mahmud Al-Muktafi Billah Shah ibni al-Marhum Sultan Ismail Nasiruddin Shah, this mosque was named after his mother, Tuanku Intan Zaharah binti Almarhum Tengku Seri Setia Raja.
The ideal time to visit this mosque is in the evening, when the evening sun shines on the mosque, turning the building into golden colour while the cooling breeze blow from the South China sea.

The mosque is located in Teluk Ibai, just over 4km away from Kuala Terengganu town centre, quite close to the beautiful beach of Terengganu's coast. The white structure of the mosque gorunds covers an area of roughly 5 acres and serves a number of villages nearby. Construction of the mosque began in 1991, designed by celebrated architect, Raja Bahrin Shah Raja Ahmad.

The beauty of its architecture and serenity of its surrounding landscape also draws a great number of visitors to Terengganu who take the opportunity to perform their prayers and take a breather from their journey at this mosque. The design of the mosque reflects a subtle Islamic influence combined with local features, incorporating the use of marble, ceramics, mosaic works and bomanite paving. Constructed with a lake surrounding it, much like a moat, the mosque is popularly referred to as the Floating Mosque. With the backdrop of the open South China Sea, this mosque is an irresistable attraction to visitors in Terengganu.

Pura Tanjung Sabtu
This architectural treasure is the private residence of Tengku Ismail bin Tengku Su and also a guesthouse for travellers who would like to experience Terengganu country living and a little bit of royal luxury. It is about 10 minutes by road from Kuala Terengganu.

Pura Tanjung Sabtu is located on 14 acres of lawns, gardens and fruit orchards, a family inheritance. Once the country retreat of the late H.H. Sultan Zainal Abidin III of Terengganu, it lies on a promontory of the slow-moving Nerus River, a tributary of Terengganu River, overhung with luxuriant natural vegetation of bamboo, Rengas trees and Nibong palm. Its name is a combination of the Sanskrit word Pura which means "palace, temple or city", and Tanjung Sabtu which is the name of the village where it is located.

Pura Tanjung Sabtu is built in the style of a rustic yet princely Terengganu palace. It is a major conservation work ensuring the survival of nine (9) endangered 19th century Terengganu Malay timber houses. The houses are elevated about three meters above ground, which provides air circulation, protection from flooding and for stray wildlife. The houses have steep tiered roofs with curved gable ends, the “Peles” is constructed from Chengal (Neobalanocarpus Heimii) timber, well known for its durability.
You can go fishing or catching fresh-water prawns along Sungai Nerus. Other attractions include boating or rafting along the river. A daily ferry service is also available. Locals use the service to go shopping or do their business at Pasar Payang in Kuala Terengganu.

Bukit Puteri
Bukit Puteri is situated at the mouth of Terengganu River. It covers an area of about 658 hectares and the height is about 200 meters from the sea level. Bukit Puteri was built to defend the Rulers of Terengganu from attacks by the enemies (from Thailand and other Malay sultanates). As it is the highest point in Kuala Terengganu, visitors standing on top of Bukit Puteri can enjoy the magnificent views of the surrounding areas.

A few historical artifacts still exists on Bukit Puteri till this present day. Among them are a big bell, cannon, a flag pole, light house, graves and a defence wall.

A cave known as Gua Puteri can also be found here. It was used as a place to keep the gun powder, stone and iron bullets. The flag pole that is on top of Bukit Puteri was used to raise the royal flag when there were any royal ceremonies held. The weight of the flag pole was around 18 meters high. The lighthouse on the peak of Bukit Puteri functioned as a guide for fishermen and sailors that siles into Kuala Sungai Terengganu. During the reign of Tengku Umar, he built a palace called the Green Palace at the foot of Bukit Puteri but was burned down in 1882. He built a new palace near the site of the Green Palace and was named Istana Maziah which still exit until today.

Nowadays, Bukit Puteri is used as a firing range for cannon when royal ceremonies are held. Besides that, Bukit Puteri has been developed into a tourist attraction.
