  1. Introduction to Terengganu
Terengganu is one of the Malaysian states which is endowed with a wealth of charming and refreshing natural landscapes. She has beaches, exotic islands, lush virgin tropical jungles, quaint fishing villages, dazzling waterfalls and many, many more attractions. Her miles and miles of white, sandy beaches and crystal clear water stretches throughout its 225 km coastline, extending from Besut in the north to Kemaman in the south. Her islands are among the most picturesque and fascinating in the country. From its myriad of colorful pastimes which include batik printing and songket weaving to the rapturous celebration of its many generations of cultural and traditional heritage, Terengganu is indeed a very blessed state.

     2. History

Terengganu emerged as an independent sultanate in 1724. The first Sultan was Tun Zainal Abidin, the younger brother of a former sultan of Johor. According to the book Tuhfat al-Nafis written by Raja Ali Haji, Tun Zainal Abidin was in 1708 installed as the Sultan of Terengganu by Daeng Menampuk also known as Raja Tua under the rule of Sultan Sulaiman Badrul Alam Shah.

Terengganu became a vassal state of Siam in the 19th century. The Sultans has been sending tributes (gifts) to Siam every three years. This ended in 1090 with the Bangkok Agreement whereby Terengganu was handed over to the British. Sultan Zainal Abidin III refused to recognize this agreement. She refused to accept a British advisor but accepted an agent of the British Counsel. A British advisor was finally installed in 1919 with J.L. Humpreys.

The Japanese Occupation (1941-1945) resulted in Terengganu being handed back to Siam. In September 1945, Terengganu was placed under the British Military Administration.

In 1945, together with Penang and Malacca, and 9 other Malay states, Terengganu joined the Malayan Union. In 1948, it joined the Federation of Malaya, which later achieved independence on 31 August 1957.

   3. Religion
In its earliest state, Terengganu practiced a Hindu-Buddhist culture combined with animist traditional beliefs for hundreds of years before the arrival of Islam. According to historial accounts, Terengganu could have been part of the Srivijaya Empire between the 7th to the 13th or 14th century. During that time, it traded extensively with the Majapahit Empire, the Khmer Empire and especially the Chinese.

Terengganu was the first Malay state to receive Islam, as attested to by a stone monument dated 1303 with Arabic inscriptions found in Kuala Berang, the capital of the district of Hulu Terengganu.During the 15th century, Terengganu became a vassal state of Melaka. After the fall of the Malacca Sultanate, Terengganu retained considerable autonomy with the emergence of Riau-Johor Empire.

Several outlying islands, including Pulau Perhentian, Pulau Kapas, Pulau Redang, are also a part of the state. The state has a total area of 12,955 km².

5. People

Apart from nature, the charm of Terengganu lies in its people. They are as beautiful as their state; courteous and helpful. The people of Terengganu welcome with open arms those who wish to share the beauty of the state. They lead a moderate and graceful lifestyle in picturesque villages where religion, tradition and culture are still dominant in their daily activities. Terengganu people are gifted. 6. Economy

Terengganu used to be Malaysia's poorest state until oil and gas were discovered off its coastline not too long ago. Terengganu's main industry now is petroleum and gas. There are huge petrochemicalcomplexes near Paka and Kerteh , involving many joint venture between the Malaysian national oil company, Petronas, and foreign multinationals. Tourism and fishing are also major industries in Terengganu, a state with a long coastline. Agriculture also remains important, with banana, rambutan, durian and various other fruits and vegetables available in season. Terengganu was traditionally famous for boat-building, with highly decorated carved wooden boats called bangau to be found in the harbor of every village and town in days not so long gone by, before electric motorboats became standard equipment for the state's fishermen.
